Major Events in the Radio/Broadcasting Industry

The Radio and Broadcasting industry is one of the oldest facets of media that has probably witnessed every major event in our history for the past two centuries.  Just like newspapers and other outputs of print media, radio and broadcasting has major events each year whose aim is to give recognition to the major movers and shakers on radio, and honor excellence in the field of journalism.  Every year, industry giants gather in these events to honor those who have dedicated their lives in the pursuit of radio programming, both news and lifestyle.

Some of the events are akin to the Grammys in the movie industry and these big corporate events are attended by many celebrities and politicians.  Some of these events are so big that it costs loads of money in terms of events planning and production.  A lot of people may consider radio as an obsolete form of mass communication, but industry experts and economists still believe that it the one media we will all come back to.

There are many important and exciting events in the Radio and Broadcasting industry, here are some of the most well attended, and highly respected among them.

The PPI Radio is a twelve year old and is one of the most awaited radio events of the year.  It aims to honor and celebrate the great achievements of the year in terms of production and programming. They have reported an increase with the entries every year, and the board agrees that each year the entries have grown in quality.  This Irish-based award is very significant because it focuses on programs with a social conscience and they uphold the values of educational Programming over entertainment, although entertainment is still a big part.

The Audie Awards could easily be the most interesting, if not weird of all the radio awards.  Its aim is to honor the best achievements in audiobooks and spoken words that entertain and educate.  It is included in the major events in radio and broadcasting because it is a growing trend to have radio shows dedicated in audio dramas and inspirational fiction work – which is commonly presented in radio before syndicated for mass commercial production.  This event is presented by the Audio Publishers Association, which is known for their excellence in  the industry.

The BBC International Radio Playwriting Competition is also another major event people in radio work for.  Many would argue that this could be the most prestigious award in radio because of the panel of judges and the high level of entry and entry rejection every year, ensuring that only the best and most outstanding programs are honored.  This annual event features the best in world-wide radio
