Five Key Elements to Database Development

Database development is a requirement for companies that manipulate large amounts of the data based on consumer information. The company that uses this information for growth and consumer relationship development needs a database package that will provide the resources of data analysis when necessary. SQL, or the Structured Query Language is fundamental for a relational database. It is a must for all database users. The SQL provides the uniform interface for all other relational databases. This includes Oracle, SQL Server and Access to name a few of the standards.

Five Critical Elements for a Solid Database

There are five important elements for a solid database that is structured securely from the beginning.

    • SQL, the Structured Query Language

    • Primary Keys

    • The NULL Factor

    • Converting Spreadsheets

  • Database Platforms

The Structured Query Language

The first element is the SQL as mentioned above. It is the core. The connection to other relational databases is significant and you want to make sure that the foundation is secure. When you need to pull data for analysis, the last thing you would want is the inability to do so because you missed a fundamental step.

Primary Keys

Primary Keys is another significant element. What makes this element important is the uniqueness. Primary keys are developed so that the possibility of any two records containing all the same information is prevented. The primary key is an identifier for records stored in a particular table. Creating a primary key is a very important decision. However, using the information from your table of records will help to create one that is unique to those records.

Your database software is another tool that you can use to generate a primary key. The software can generate record IDs that are unique to that table of records. Social security numbers do not make great identifiers because of privacy laws and other issues. Zip codes do not make great identifiers because several cities can hold the same zip code.

The NULL Factor

The third element that is important in database development is the NULL value. This is important because when you do not have information for a particular part of a record, NULL can render the field unknown until data is obtained. It is not just the zero factors. Although zero may be the data input for the field, simply put, it just means that the data is unavailable.

Converting Spreadsheets

The fourth element to database development is saving time with transferring information. Many companies already maintain spreadsheets of some sort to maintain the client information, be it using Microsoft Excel or another software application. If you decide to implement a database software package, you should be able to convert the spreadsheets into the database. Most really good software packages should offer you this option. This saves loads of time and will help the structuring process so that you can move forward with setting up your database.

Database Platforms

The fifth element is really important relative to your specific company. All platforms are not equal for a very obvious reason. All companies are not equal based on what each company offers, size, data maintained, etc. A small company may do well with a spreadsheet type database because of the limited information and this could very well be Microsoft Excel. However, larger companies need the power of a large database because of the amount of data that needs to be manipulated.

Different features are offered with the various software applications based on the needs of different companies. The cost is relative and depends on the features needed. You can do more detailed research to compare the software applications available to implement your database development program. Compare features and costs to make sure you make an informed decision based on the needs of your company.
